Federation of Gujarat Malayalee Associations (FEGMA) - Overview
The Federation of Gujarat Malayalee Associations (FEGMA) was formally established on 27th July 1997 during a historic meeting held at Vasvik Hall, Race Course, Baroda. The initiative was spearheaded under the proficient leadership of the Baroda Kerala Samajam, in collaboration with the Gandhinagar Malayalee Samajam, with the vision of creating a unified platform to bring together Malayalees residing across the state of Gujarat.
The formation ceremony was inaugurated by Smt. Vilasini Ramachandran, IAS, who was then serving as the Commissioner of Baroda Municipal Corporation. During the occasion, Dr. Sivasankaran M. Nair, the Formation Committee Convener and Treasurer of Baroda Kerala Samajam, presented the “Karadu Reka” (Charter of Formation), which laid the foundation for FEGMA’s guiding principles and organizational framework.
FEGMA is officially registered with the Office of the Charity Commissioner, Baroda under Registration No. A/2990/Vadodara. Additionally, the organization is recognized by NORKA (Non-Resident Keralites Affairs Department) with Registration No. GJ/06/109, further affirming its credibility and formal status as a representative body of the Malayalee diaspora in Gujarat.
At its inception, Mr. A.P. Simon, then President of Gandhinagar Malayalee Samajam, was unanimously elected as the first President of FEGMA, while Shri Sreekumar M, then General Secretary of Baroda Kerala Samajam, was elected as the first General Secretary of FEGMA. Their leadership laid a strong foundation for the federation, ensuring that the organization moved forward with a spirit of unity, service, and cultural preservation.
From its very beginning, FEGMA has been envisioned as more than just an association—it is a federated body representing Malayalee Samajams spread across Gujarat. The primary objective has been to promote cultural, social, and educational development, while also fostering cooperation and understanding among Malayalees living away from their native state of Kerala. By uniting different Malayalee associations under one umbrella, FEGMA ensures collective representation, stronger networking, and a greater voice in matters concerning the community.
Over the years, FEGMA has played a pivotal role in preserving Kerala’s rich traditions, language, and heritage among the younger generations in Gujarat. Through cultural programs, Onam celebrations, educational seminars, social welfare initiatives, and active participation in broader Indian diaspora activities, the federation continues to serve as a bridge between Kerala and Gujarat. It also provides a platform for community service, youth empowerment, and charitable activities, strengthening bonds both within the Malayalee community and with the larger society.
Today, FEGMA stands as a symbol of unity, cultural pride, and service, representing the aspirations of thousands of Malayalees settled in Gujarat. The federation remains committed to carrying forward its founding vision—to unite, uplift, and celebrate the Malayalee community, while contributing positively to the cultural diversity and social fabric of Gujarat.
